Blogging: Do You Have an About Me Page?

Do you have an About Me or Welcome page on your blog? I'm not an expert by any means, but I knew at some point I needed to get around to writing an introduction about Me. I entitled my page "Welcome" because I like to welcome readers and make them feel at home here at West Pear Avenue. I've also always struggled with talking about ME.

Here is where help comes in for me...Philly Social Media Moms. This group has by far changed the way I see blogging and I am so thankful for the support and talent that exists throughout the group. I attended a workshop not too long ago where Cecily Kellogg was the guest speaker and spoke about writing. Cecily lead us in a few different writing exercises and the final exercise was to write our bio (yikes!).

Writing a bio is really difficult...especially for me because I don't like to talk about me. But, because we read our bios out loud (there were about 15 of us) I got instant feedback on what I wrote. And I can't even tell you how helpful but at the same time difficult that exercise was for me.

What did I learn from the exercise and from the other women in the group?
- Immediately out of the starting gate write about what you are there for (for me: decorating/design). Don't beat around the bush - why am I reading your blog and who are you?
- I am awesome and I need to write about the things that make me awesome.
- You are awesome and you need to write about the things that make you awesome.

It has taken me a few weeks to update my Welcome page, but I was excited and I was motivated to get it done. The great thing about an introduction page is that it is a work in progress and can be updated at any time, but it should always be strong.

If you don't have an intro to who you are, draft one up and get a start on it.

And remember that YOU are AWESOME.

  1. I noticed your beautiful photo and great "about" page last week when your blog got it's updated look, so fun to hear about the process. This makes me take a keen eye to my own "about" page...may be time for a little update!

  2. I too noticed your new page. You look great! I agree, writing about yourself and even worse, trying to promote yourself, can be sooo hard. I would have hated having to read my bio out loud, but I'm sure it was great to get the feedback. I think my little "about me" blurb could definitely use a little updating.

  3. You, my friend, really are awesome!!! Your about page looks great and it reads really well. Thank you for posting about this, its so nice to know others are going through the same thing. I really need to get on this I guess. But I feel like I'm at a crossroads, like I'm not sure what I should/want to be doing...should I go all out and redo my blog look, write all these other pages, add pinterest buttons, etc. Should I really "go for" blogging? Have even considered trying to get some sponsors or put up some ads. I'm not sure. I've considered posting about it and just putting everything out there. Not sure yet. Anyways, so West Pear Interiors?! Congratulations, Holly!!! Amazing. I wish you all the best with this new endeavor, you definitely have the talent!

  4. Hi Holly - you are awesome and Shannon and I missed you at the workshop on Sat. We will fill you in on what we learned when we go on our thrifting day. One of the things will make you smile - We learned that you should not name your bio page About me or About. You are one smart blogger!!!

    Can't wait to see you.

    My best- Diane

  5. Thanks for sharing your tips, Holly! I did a welcome post, but it's buried and I'm sure no one even looks at it. It definitely needs an update! Such a great idea to have others give you feedback, I like that yours is simple, to the point and includes a cute photo! You're awesomely inspiring in so many ways!

  6. You are so inspirational, Holly! And I love your introduction - warm, welcoming, and most of all it tells us a lot about you in very little time. My own 'about' is in need of some work - actually my whole blog needs an overhaul. After the office is done, I think that's my next big priority. The office has been a huge undertaking, and I know I need to stay with it... but the temptation to do other things is so enticing ;-)

  7. Hi there! Just came across your blog from Pewter & Sage and saw you mentioned Doylestown in your comment. We're from Bucks County and thought I'd stop by and say hello!
And just FYI, I'm glad you wrote a welcome page because I clicked there as soon as I came to your blog. Nice work!

  9. Aww, I knew I liked you! Very well done. I should take a look at mine- I don't think I've looked at it since I originally wrote it. Now you got me thinking!
