Pattern Play - Inspired by this Room

Today I wanted to give you a pattern play based on this living room I came across on Houzz. Check out the rug!

Living Room, Upper East Side Apartment, New York City traditional living room

Overall, the room is bright and appears to be getting some natural light flooding in to the right. It's a functional space featuring built-in bookshelves, two coffee tables, a club chair, and a sofa. The cat appears to be real and staring right at the camera, but let's ignore that aspect. The rug is the shining star in this room and really could do all the talking, but let's add in a few pillows and window treatments (we'll pretend there are windows over to the right that need some dressing up).

While I really love the pattern and colors throughout the rug, what I really wanted to do was pull out that steely blue color and use that to continue to soften the room. Both curtain fabrics at the top are sheer fabrics from Robert Allen to keep that light coming into the room. And then I paired a few pillows with each for different looks. The throw I added in for some additional pattern and texture. I actually just bought this throw for our house and I love it and an affordable option I might add as well.

What do you like about this room?

  1. I think the room is nice as is, but could definitely use your curtains and pillows to have a little something. I like the curtains on the right. Since the walls are so stark, I think the brighter pattern would look nice. I really love the built-ins and the large piece of art.

  2. The rug is the star of the show in that room although I do like the built-ins and overall architectural elements like the doorway and the ceiling. I like what you have pulled together, it could go either way.

  10. Oooh, this one is fun, Holly! Except that cat is freakin' me out...I'm not a cat person!!! Looooove the combo on the left, those pillows are killer together:)

You should totally go and download that baby saying print...isn't it right on now that we've experienced having actual babies? Plus its like a good excuse for not always having a clean house;) Yes, Maura is talking a ton. It amazes me how she says new words everyday and how she is putting concepts together. Its so cool now how she can communicate what she wants to eat or do or whatever. Our babies are growing up:)

  12. I am torn, as I always am with your Pattern Plays, because all of your choices are spot on. I really do love how that floral pillow you chose on the left reflects the rug so well.

Beautiful job! Happy to see some new additions to your header, too!

  14. I wouldn't have thought that that room could use any improvement until I saw the fabrics you selected to go with it. Well done!
