Thinking About...the Windsor bench

Do you have a bench anywhere in your home? Our Windsor bench is probably my favorite piece of furniture in our house. It's versatile, durable, surprisingly comfortable, but I'm back to thinking about painting it once the weather gets a little nicer. I know whenever we move that this bench may serve a different purpose, but I think painting it black would be a win/win decision.

Here is what it looks like now. You can see it's got sort of a chestnut color stain.

Here's another photo - notice anything in the background? I just got new white draperies to add to the dining room to replace the green drapes that were there previously. The white gives such a crisper, fresher look and really makes the green drapes look dirty.

I think painting the bench black would give it a cleaner look too. What do you think? I've also got some fabric on the way that will be used to make another pillow for the bench. I love mixing classic pieces such as Windsor seating with up-to-date fabrics and accessories.

This photo below from Traditional Home magazine is some good inspiration for going with black paint on the bench.

I've got several painting projects on my list for the spring including the dresser in our bedroom that I really want to get done. Hopefully spring is right around the corner with the way our weather has been here. What paint projects do you have on your list?

  1. I think your bench would look stunning in black!

I just picked up a small side table that needs a little bit of painting love, so once the office is complete - I'm really trying to be disciplined here - the table will make its way onto the priority list of DIYs waiting to be done!

  2. What a gorgeous bench! I think whether you paint it or not completely depends on how you'll be using it. I love the wood, but it would be beautiful in black too.

  3. Oh, I'd love it in black, Holly! That inspiration photo is very convincing! I have a bench I painted black a couple years ago, I'm ready for it to be light, again! :)

  4. I like the idea of it black, especially with some of that beautiful warm wood grain showing through in places. My only caution is that I'm trying to be very careful with what I paint lately, especially very classic pieces. I'm not saying that the painting trend is over by any means, but I wonder how many people will look back and wish they hadn't painted grandma's four poster bed... I hope you don't take that the wrong way, of course you should paint it if you want too!!!
    Take care,

  5. This is really beautiful--graceful and delicate and such a classic piece. I like the idea of painting it black. It keeps it classic but updates it and makes it a bit more versatile in my mind. Can't wait for the "after" if you do decide to paint!

  6. I spy a Thirty-One bag! I have one of those enormous organizing totes in the same pattern (but with green) and I love everything I can shove in there! The wood stain looks quite pretty in the photo, but I think the black would be great, too!

  7. I think it will look very pretty painted black. The bench itself is such a traditional style and the black paint will modernize and give it a little edge. Excited to see what you decide to do!

  8. love that you are painting the bench black! i just got home from a consultation with a client, who i advised to paint a bench, a wooden chair, and her fireplace mantel/surround SW's Black Magic (which is totally magic, by the way).

  10. I bought a similar bench at an estate sale for my mother to put in her booth. They painted it a bright green and it was so fun! But, like you, I would want to go with black if it was for me. Maybe even a little distressing to show the brown underneath?

  11. Love that Windsor bench, so classic!! It will look great in black, especially with those hip new pillows, love the juxtaposition!!

I have so many things I want to paint. Of course half of them were things I wanted to paint last summer and never got around to, so let's hope this year is more productive:)

  13. I saw the paint and was thinking "black" and you seem to be on that track too. It will be a wonderful neutral that will ground the space and be perfect with the fun fabric you have thus far.

  14. As much as I love natural wood, I think painting it black would be lovely! My MIL just painted all her Windsor dining chairs black much like the image you posted and they look great!
